This Week in Aspen: August 24-31, 2018

Friday, August 24

Anderson Ranch Auctionette (11:45 a.m., Anderson Ranch Arts Center). Auctionettes are fun, high-energy affairs offering a wonderful opportunity to buy original artwork by Anderson Ranch faculty, visiting artists, students and staff, while supporting the Ranch’s educational programs! Barbeque lunch is from 11:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. ($10). Auctionettes are free and open to the public, from 12:15 – 1 p.m. Select Fridays throughout the summer.

Saturday, August 25

Chromeo DJ Set (9 p.m., Belly Up). Electrofunk duo Chromeo return for a DJ set at Belly Up on Saturday night. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $65 for reserved seating. Purchase tickets in advance online here.

Sunday, August 26

Bluegrass Sunday (12 p.m., Aspen Mountain). Take the Silver Queen Gondola or opt to hike to the top of Aspen Mountain for Bluegrass Sunday featuring Chain Station. This free open-air concert will be held from noon to 3 p.m. just outside the Sundeck.

ACES Full Moon Photography (7-10 p.m., Rock Bottom Ranch). Discover the photographic possibilities of the full moon and use the stars to light the dark landscape with Jeremy Swanson. Taking advantage of a night when the moonlight transforms nighttime into day, practice operating a camera manually and use a tripod to capture the magic of the Astro. This workshop is open to all, and participants are welcome to use any kind of digital camera, (SLR, mirrorless and iPhone are all ok). Participants must register through the Art Base.

 

Monday, August 27

Stephen Marley.jpg

Stephen Marley (8 p.m., Belly Up). Eight-time Grammy Award winner and reggae star Stephen Marley returns to Belly Up this Monday night. Tickets are $36 for general admission and $61 for reserved seating. Purchase tickets in advance at the Belly Up box office or online.

Tuesday, August 28

Wild Yoga with ACES (5:15 p.m., Hallam Lake). Presented in partnership with Lead With Love, join Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) Education Director Arin Trook and the ACES/Aspen Yoga Society WildYoga teachers for an outdoor yoga class along the edge of Hallam Lake.  Guests are encouraged to bring their own mats and contribute a suggested donation of $10. Class will begin at 5:20 p.m. at Hallam Lake or will move indoors in case of rain.

Wednesday, August 29

Motherlode Volleyball Classic (through Sept.3, Koch Park). The Motherlode Volleyball Classic attracts volleyball players from all over the United States and Canada competing in 21 different divisions including Men's and Women's Masters/Seniors and Open divisions; Co-Ed (and, Reverse Co-Ed) and Men's and Women's A, BB and B. Nahko and Medicine for the People (7:30 p.m. Belly Up). Nahko and Medicine for the People will play Wednesday and Thursday night at Belly Up. The six member group is headed by front man Nahko Bear. Purchase tickets in advance at the Belly Up box office or online.

Thursday, August 30

History Coach Tour (10:30 a.m., Wheeler Opera House). Enjoy a guided tour of historic downtown Aspen in Aspen Historical Society’s unique electric vehicle – complete with a visit to both the Wheeler/Stallard Museum and the Holden/Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum. Guests will gain a new understanding of Aspen’s transformations from a mining town to ski town to year-round, world-famous destination. Reservations are required for this tour. Price for this tour is $25 adult, $20 senior, children 12 and under free.

Friday, August 31

JAS Labor Day Experience (through Sept. 2, Snowmass Town Park). The Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Experience includes three days of world-class music. In addition to headline performances on the main stage, two side stages keep the music going throughout the day with a mix of up and coming artists. The JAS Village provides shopping, eclectic food and beverage vendors, a kids corner and more. Friday night’s lineup includes headliners Lionel Richie and Michael Franti & Spearhead. Single day general admission and JAS deck tickets are still available and can be purchased online here.

Boz Scaggs (9 p.m., Belly Up). Grammy-winning, chart-topping blues, jazz, and R&B singer/songwriter and performer Boz Scaggs returns to Belly up for a Friday evening show. Tickets are $95 for general admission and $375 for reserved. Purchase tickets in advance online or at the Belly Up box office.
