Aspen Fall Bucket List

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit Aspen. The weather gets a little crisper, the elk begin to bugle and migrate, and the colors change, blanketing the entire valley in a spectacular yellow gold. With multiple events and outdoor activities to choose from during the fall, our friends at Aspen Bucket List have compiled a Fall Bucket List to get you ready for the upcoming season:

  1. Peep the Fall Colors – As the air gets cooler, the leaves begin to change and the fall colors are a site not to be missed! One of our favorite places to view fall colors is Capitol Creek Trail. You not only get an amazing view of our favorite fourteener (Capitol Peak) the majority of the way, you also are surrounded by lush and beautiful golden leaves! Some other great viewing spots to add to your list are American Lake, Maroon Bells, and taking a drive up to Independence Pass

  1. Snowmass Balloon Festival (September 7th-9th) – Another one of our favorite activities to "check off" for fall. This festival is great for both families and adults. Dozens of hot air balloons are staged and launch from Snowmass rodeo lot and scatter vibrantly across the sky. Get there early to see the launching of the balloons and a chance to meet the pilots. If you aren’t an early riser, you can also check out the glow festival at night. The balloons are lit up while grounded all across Snowmass Village. Either way, it’s a great photo op!

  1. The Meeting (October 3rd- 6th) – If you love winter sports and films, this is the best weekend to add to your Bucket List this fall. Sponsored by GoPro and AspenSnowmass, the festival features films highlighting snow sports and some amazing athletes who premiere their films exclusively. Last year, Travis Rice premiered his film “Fourth Phase,” followed by an informative Q&A session. The NEPSAs are the kick-off to the weekend, where local athletes submit their short films for a chance to receive $1,000 for first place! It’s a great booster for the approaching ski season.

  1. Ruggerfest (September 13th-16th) –Watch the Aspen Gents take on teams from all over the world in a grueling rugby tournament at the 51st annual Ruggerfest. There’s nothing like cheering on the home team while drinking a cold beer on the sidelines.

  1. Climb a Peak – September is the best time of year to cross off "climb a peak" on your list. There are fewer people, beautiful colors, and cooler, stable weather. There’s truly no feeling like the accomplishment and exhaustion after a big climb. There are many near-by peaks that are accessible for the intermediate hiker who wants a bigger challenge: Mt. Sopris, Mt. Daly, Castle and Conundrum Peak. . . just to name a few. While these hikes don’t require technical ability, they are high altitude climbs. It is always best to know before you go and be prepared. Do not go alone and check out Mountain Rescue Aspen’s backcountry safety information to keep safe in the backcountry.

  1. Go Paragliding off of Aspen Mountain- If you’re a thrill seeker, this is the perfect addition to your fall bucket list. Led by professional instructors at Aspen Paragliding, you won't forget this unreal experience soaring above the fall foliage among the surrounding Aspen valleys.

  1. Participate in the Golden Leaf Half Marathon (September 22nd) - Perfect for runners looking to challenge themselves this fall, this scenic route traverses from Snowmass village to the heart of Aspen Trails on the mountains. Nominated as one of "America's Most Scenic Races" by Trail Runner Magazine, this course stays true to it's name as runners get breathtaking views of the surrounding fall foliage throughout the course.
  2. Attend the 39th Annual Aspen Filmfest (September 25th-30th) - If you're a film buff you won't want to miss out on this flagship event. From award-worthy fall previews to acclaimed independent films, attendees are often the first in the country to view these Academy Award winning films.
  3. Take part in Lead with Love (October 25th-28th) - The four-day event features yoga, meditation and spiritual guidance with notable presenters including John Mackey, Lynn Twist, Gretchen Bleiler, Gina and Jerry Murdock, among many others.  The event is designed to transform guests and their overall health and happiness as presenters and participants come together to cultivate an event focused on reaching optimal wellbeing.
