Since 1986, Mark Manders has been engaged in an ongoing project he refers to as his "Self-Portrait as a Building," mapping his artistic persona through site-specific re-negotiations of physical materials. As he explains, "this building can shrink or expand at any moment... all words created by mankind are on hand." The organizing principle is a desire to bypass the written word using three-dimensional objects accumulated in a manner that replicate the literary construction of sentences. Bringing materials together into uneasy proximity with these aspirations, Manders ultimately creates mysterious and uncanny sculptural tableaux-part still life, part exquisite corpse. The exhibition is co-organized with the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and will travel to the Walker
Art Center, Minneapolis.
